What can we help with?

  1. Leaking pipes and joints

Drips under a sink, a weeping joint, a pinhole in copper or a stain spreading across a ceiling. Tell us where the water is showing and we hand your enquiry to a plumber who covers your postcode, if one does.

  2. Running toilets and dripping taps

A cistern that never stops filling, a toilet trickling into the pan, an overflow running outside or a tap that will not stop dripping. Describe it and we hand the details to a plumber who works in your postcode, where one is available.

From your enquiry to a plumber

How it works

  1. Tell us what is wrong.

Choose the kind of fault, give your postcode and describe what you can see or hear. Plain words are fine.

  2. We look at your postcode.

Where a plumber takes jobs in your area, and with your say-so, your enquiry goes to them alone. Where none does, we tell you plainly.

  3. Speak to the plumber yourself.

They get in touch, and you settle the visit, the work and the price between you. Nothing is agreed until you say so.

Two copper water pipes in an open kitchen sink cupboard, one with a brass stopcock and one with a chrome isolating valve, beside a grey plastic sink trap and a folded tea towel.
The stopcock is often under the kitchen sink. The chrome valve beside it shuts off one pipe only.

Useful to know before you enquire

Useful to know

None of this is needed to send an enquiry, but it helps the plumber understand the job sooner.

  • Where your stopcock is

Often under the kitchen sink, where the supply pipe comes into the house. It can also be in a downstairs toilet, under the stairs or by the front door. Turning it clockwise shuts off the cold mains.

  • Where the water is coming from

Which room and which fitting, and whether it drips all the time, runs, or only appears when a tap is used or a toilet is flushed.

  • Whether a valve stops it

Many taps and toilets have their own isolating valve on the pipe. A quarter turn with a flat screwdriver, so the slot sits across the pipe, usually shuts off that fitting alone.

  • A photo or two

Pictures of the leak, the fitting or the label on a hot water cylinder help the plumber understand the job when they get in touch.

Water near lights or sockets? Keep away from them and do not touch wet switches. Turn the water off at the stopcock if you can reach it safely.

Questions

Do you carry out plumbing work?

No. Plumbing Repairs North Herts arranges introductions only and employs no plumbers. When a plumber covers your postcode and you agree, we hand your enquiry to that one plumber, and you deal with them directly.

What if nobody covers my postcode?

We tell you so, and your details go no further than us. Enquiries are handed on only to a plumber whose patch includes your postcode.

Who is responsible for the water pipe outside my house?

In England the water company looks after the pipe from the main to your property boundary, including the stop tap there. The supply pipe from the boundary into your home is normally yours, even where it runs under your garden, drive or path. Pipes shared with neighbours can be shared responsibilities, so check with your water company.

Is it free to send an enquiry?

Yes, completely. You pay us nothing and are not bound to go ahead. Whatever the repair costs is settled between you and the plumber.

Can you deal with an emergency right now?

This is not an emergency line. If water is pouring out, shut it off at the stopcock and keep away from wet electrics. Call 999 if anyone is in danger. If you smell gas, phone 0800 111 999, the National Gas Emergency Service number.

What happens to my details?

We keep them only to handle your enquiry. With your agreement they go to one plumber who covers your postcode, if there is one, and to no list or other firm. The privacy notice says how long we hold them.
